Famagusta…a sanctuary of ancient history
If beaches are your priority, then Famagusta is definitely for you. This part of the island is renowned to have some of the finest unspoilt and un-crowded beaches anywhere in the Mediterranean. Although, a vast amount of accommodation is available in Famagusta, we have been very selective with our choice. Those interested in history will enjoy visiting the walled town of Famagusta and hearing about the Ottoman siege, which was once the ancient Venetian city.
As a base for a holiday on the island, the Famagusta region is more secluded than Kyrenia. Most meals will probably be taken in the hotel, since eating out becomes an excursion in itself. |
 |
Northern Cyprus History and culture…
The old town of Famagusta has some of the most superb medieval architecture in the Middle East, and less a figure than Leonardo da Vinci is thought to have been involved in the design of its colossal Venetian fortifications. Within the town walls an intriguing range of monuments, mainly churches can still be visited. It is by no means a beautiful city, and a full day should ideally be devoted to stroll in the streets of the old walled town seeking out the early |

churches and Venetian buildings. Other hidden treasures include the antique Roman city of Salamis, Othello’s Tower, Bronze Age ruins of Alasia and Engomi, the Monastery of St. Barnabas, Royal Tombs and Kantara Castle.
|
Sun, sea and sand…
Famagusta, also a peaceful town in North Cyprus, is another fantastic resort for beach holidays as the bay itself is a wonderful expanse of golden sandy sands, and is also very close to the town, an outdoor museum of architecture and ancient ruins. But for the ultimate seaside getaway, the area close to the Salamis Ruins offers the best choice of sandy beaches. This region, approximately 6 miles north of Famagusta, is perfect for those seeking a relaxing holiday as most hotels are a short distance away from the beach.

 |
Further along the east coast, at the foot of the Karpaz Peninsula is Bogaz, a sleepy fishing village in the Yeni Iskele district. Here you will feel yourself unwind completely, as you are also within easy reach of the Karpaz which is home to the island’s most deserted sandy beaches. The Golden Sands Beach is one of the world’s finest and longest beaches with sands stretching as far a 3 miles long. Other beaches include Palm Beach, Salamis Bay and Klapsides. |
| |
Wildlife and nature…
North Cyprus is also an animal lovers’ paradise; around 400-500 wild donkey’s roam the tranquil Karpaz Panhandle. In this district you will also find a beautiful national park, where you will find a large number of birds, wild donkey’s, turtles and rare flora.
With far more to offer than meets the eye, we certainly believe Famagusta will soon evolve and emerge into one of Cyprus’ most popular resorts. |
