Overview
Iskele, Karpaz
Originally named Trikomo, Yeni Iskele (which means New Iskele) was re-named in 1975 after a town in the South of Cyprus that a large number of Turkish Cypriots left.
Sat between Famagusta and the Karpaz peninsula, Iskele is a fairly small town that enjoys the beautiful weather that one would associate with Cyprus as well as a traditional village feel amongst the locals.
Restaurants and cafes in Iskele offer the best fresh cuisine from a delicious menu and the resident flora and fauna is a beautiful reminder of just how lovely North Cyprus is. The most famous of course are the Karpaz donkeys that wander happily free, casually grazing amongst the scrub and plants although you won’t really see any in the centre of town as they generally stick to the wilder areas where they have more space to roam.

Iskele is home to multiple churches and ancient buildings reflecting the Christian heritage of the Greek Orthodox people that have lived in Iskele in previous generations that are definitely worth visiting at least in passing.
They include the Byzantine church of St Jacob from the 15th Century (also known as Avios Iakovos) and the 12th Century church of the Blessed Virgin Mary that has been converted into the Icon Museum (also known as Panagina Theotokos).
If you’re looking for something a little more lively, why not make sure to visit during the first weeks of July and August when Iskele and the surrounding villages will really come alive during the Annual Festival in July and the Grape Festival in August where the locals will sell homemade goods as well as organising parties, competitions and offer the opportunity for visitors to make their own wine!
There are limited hotels in Iskele which is why most choose stay in Famagusta hotels, while on their holidays.
Overall Iskele is a traditional North Cyprus town and a typical part of Karpaz with untouched beauty and a traditional feel – it’s the perfect place to experience true relaxation.
