The significant column in Ataturk square of Turkish Nicosia was made in 1550 by the venetians. It once marked the St. Mark lion, but this was removed by the Ottomans. The column was then re-established in 1915 by the British, whom took it from the ancient Salamis ruins of Famagusta.

The buildings around the column were also made during the British colonial times in the early 20th century. Around the column there is also now a fountain and a platform with British markings. The platform was constructed to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, of which was announced to Cyprus from this platform. 60 years on, we are now celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. In North Cyprus there is many events taking place with expats and locals. From balls to concerts to street parties. The Cypriots are really getting into the mood of celebrating. The extra two days holiday in June 4/5 mean employees only take three days annual leave to get an extra week-long holiday. This has also meant an influx of Brits visiting North Cyprus for their celebrations. What are you doing on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend?
