Itinerary

D1 COLOMBO AIRPORT – PINNAWALA – DAMBULLA (135km – 4.5 hrs)

You’ll be met at the Colombo Airport by your guide and transferred to Dambulla via the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which provides a safe haven for these enchanting creatures. As we move further inland, you’ll feel the climate becoming cooler as the landscapes become a series of lush rolling hills. Here, the famous elephant orphanage, with its 100 charges, lies at the base of the central highlands. Since 1984, the orphanage has offered refuge to rescued and orphaned elephants, provided them with shelter and care, and given them the opportunity to roam freely in their natural habitat. Visit the orphanage at feeding time, and watch the adults gently browse their coconut leaves, while the calves are bottle-fed before they enjoy frolicking in the Maha Oya River. We then continue on to Dambulla, where you will overnight at a local hotel.

D2 DAMBULLA – SIGIRIYA – POLONNARUWA – DAMBULLA (160km – 3.5 hrs)

After enjoying breakfast, we set off for a day of heritage and adventure. Our tour starts with a climb to the Sigiriya Fortress, built in the fifth century, which sits atop a rocky outcrop known as ‘Lion Rock’ that juts almost 200 meters above the forest’s canopy. This citadel was built by King Kashyapa, and served as the inner stronghold of a vast city. Abandoned and forgotten, the city was reclaimed by the forest, becoming invisible until it was rediscovered by British explorers, and a long, meticulous archaeological excavation began. Today, the fortress can be explored, and you’ll marvel at the art and amazing feats of early engineering that make the complex so fascinating. Explore the terraced gardens, see the king’s ‘Mirror Wall’ and be captivated by the extensive and fragile frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’. We’ll pass through the ‘belly’ of Lion Rock and climb the snaking staircase to the summit, where you can enjoy the breath-taking vistas of the forest and beyond. In the afternoon, the tour takes you to the ruins of the ancient city of Polannaruwa. Constructed over 1000 years ago, the well-preserved remains of the city feature a man-made lake, a magnificent royal palace, and a selection stunning temples. We’ll visit the Gal Viharaya and marvel at the four images of Buddha, carved from stone, as well as the statue of King Parakramabahu, the Lotus Bath and the Audience Hall. The tour also visits the Temple of Shiva, the Galpotha, Watadage and the impressive Lankathilaka amongst other sites.

Overnight at a Dambulla hotel. Breakfast included.

D3 DAMBULLA – MATALE – KANDY (90km – 2 hrs)

The day starts on a spiritual note, as we make our way to the Golden Temple of Dambulla. We’ll explore the awe-inspiring 2000 year-old temple caved deep into the mountainside, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sacred pilgrimage site consists of five caves that feature kilometres of ancient frescoes and over 150 images of Buddha. Each cave tells of a different era and has its own unique highlights, such as a 14 metre tall rock carving of Buddha, or a cave ceiling decorated with over 1500 painted images of Buddha and kings. From Dambulla, the tour continues to the spice gardens of Matele, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan cooking demonstration.

We then move on to Kandy in the evening for a visit to the beautiful Peradeniva Royal Botanical Gardens, which date back to the 14th century. Under the care of the British, the gardens were transformed into what they are today, with fields of orchids that bloom year-round and fragrant spice gardens that fill the air with rich and sweet scents. We’ll walk through the impressive Avenue of Palms to the Great Lawn where a solitary java willow stands eerily commanding in the centre. The day’s excursions come to an end with a cultural show, which features a series of 12 traditional and folk dances, accompanied by an entrancing drum orchestra. The show culminates with a nail-biting fire walk performance. Overnight at a local Kandy Hotel. Breakfast included.

D4 KANDY – COLOMBO (115km – 2.5 hrs)

The city of Kandy is famous for its breath-taking lakeside location, framed by rolling hills. While everywhere you look in this city, you’ll find something of beauty and awe; nothing can quite compete with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The 16th century complex is the holiest of Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. The vast, magnificent temple was built for the sole purpose of housing a tooth of the Lord Buddha, which is ritually cleansed weekly by Buddhist monks using holy scented water.

The innermost section of the stunning complex, where the temple itself is found, stands surrounded by a great walled moat. Other notable structures to look out for on your tour of the complex include the Royal Palace, the New Palace, the Queen’s Bathing House and the Golden Canopy. Enjoy your time in this majestic site and take in the serene atmosphere that has characterised it for centuries.

From the temple, our tour continues on to Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo. Here, the busy, colourful streets are a stark contrast to the slow, graceful lifestyle of the rest of the country, and you’ll see modern skyscrapers towering above old colonial buildings. Yet as modern and busy as the city is, it manages to maintain its characteristic charm. We’ll visit the famous Pettah Bazaar, see stunning Buddhist and Hindu temples, and visit the city’s upmarket residential area, where beautiful villas and mansions line the stately streets. Before leaving the city, you’ll have the opportunity to do some shopping or continue exploring the city at your leisure before being transferred to your hotel in Colombo

Overnight at a local hotel in Colombo. Breakfast included.
