Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi - Arrival

Welcome to the trip of a lifetime. Please make a note of my contact number and feel free to get in touch should you require anything.

A chauffeur with a sign bearing your name will greet you at Hanoi airport and transfer you to your hotel. Your one-hour drive will be an amusing introduction to Hanoi, as you get your first sights of overloaded scooters and the organised chaos that dominates traffic in the historic town of Hanoi.

Day 2: Hanoi - City Tour (B)

Your first full day begins at 8:00am, when your guide will meet you at your hotel. Your personal tour begins at the remarkable Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where you can learn about Ho Chi Minh and why he remains so loved by the country. From here, the tour moves to the beautiful Presidential Gardens and One Pillar Pagoda; a small temple where, according to legend, couples will be granted requests to Buddha for sons. After the One Pillar Pagoda, you have a choice of visiting the Fine Arts Museum, the Temple of Literature, the Military Museum or Hoa Lo prison, depending on your interests. Please note that all visitors to temples and pagodas are required to dress appropriately; with knees and shoulders covered.

After the tour, the afternoon is yours to explore the Old Quarter where you can experience truly traditional Vietnamese culture before enjoying a unique water puppet show in the town’s centre.

Day 3: Hanoi - Ha Long Bay (B,L,D)

Pack light for your relaxing trip to Ha Long Bay! All you’ll need is some beach-wear, a change of clothes, your toiletries and something warm for during the winter months. As always, make sure to bring your camera and sunscreen. Settle up your hotel bill and check out, while the staff pack your remaining luggage securely in their storage for the duration of your trip to Ha Long Bay.

8:00 – 8:30am: A tour bus will collect you from your hotel. Please note that collection time may vary due to multiple pick-up points and potential traffic.

The four-hour bus journey will take you through miles of lush green farmlands and several traditional villages before arriving in Ha Long Bay, where you’ll be welcomed on board your boat at the harbour. A seafood lunch fit for a king will be served on board as you gently cruise between the soaring limestone islets that have made the bay so famous.

During the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a tour of the stunning Bright Lagoon, before having the opportunity to explore a bit by rowboat or kayak. Make sure to book a kayak in advance from reception so you don’t miss out! The area is home to the exceptionally rare white-headed langur, so be on the lookout around Cat Ba Island. Later, you’ll return to the boat where you can take part in a traditional Vietnamese cooking class. If you prefer to relax though, you’re free to soak up some sun, have a dip in the pool or spoil yourself with a spa treatment.

After a long day of exploring, sunset cocktails will be served on deck, followed by dinner.

Day 4: Ha Long Bay (B/L)

We start the day off early with a gentle Tai Chi demonstration on the sundeck, with tea and coffee available, followed by a buffet breakfast. You’ll then have the opportunity to visit the breath-taking Surprise Cave; one of the biggest caves in Ha Long Bay, where millions of years of erosion has sculpted elaborate stalactites that hang from the ceilings of the cave chambers.

Lunch will then be served on board before saying your goodbyes and disembarking at midday. Your bus will transport you back to Hanoi by approximately 4:30pm, where the evening is yours to explore, do some last minute shopping, or simply relax.

 Day 5: Hanoi - Hue (B/L)

You will be collected and transported to Hanoi airport for your one-hour flight to Hue. Once in Hue, you’ll be transferred to your hotel to check in and secure your luggage before setting off on a motorbike tour of historical Hue.

You’ll be met at your hotel by your guide and the team of highly skilled and experienced drivers who will be taking you on your tour. After a safety briefing, we set off for an adventure. The tour will take you through the quaint lanes, local markets and past picturesque canals of the area. There will be plenty of opportunity to photographs en route, and nervous passengers needn’t be concerned, since the tour will be at a gentle pace of 40km per hour at most. But, if you prefer, you can choose to do the tour in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

Highlights of your journey include the Imperial City, with its 9 Holy Canons that represent the seasons and the elements. Here, you’ll get to visit the Forbidden Purple, enclosed within the Imperial City, where only royalty were once allowed to walk. You’ll also learn about Vietnam’s fascinating emperors and their captivating histories. After a full day of discovery and exploration, you’ll be treated to a traditional Buddhist banquet at a pagoda.

Day 6: Hue - Hoi An (B)

Your day begins at 8:30am, when you depart Hue for Hoi An. The 160km journey is a particularly scenic one, taking you through vast coastal rice paddies to Lang Co; a small fishing village where the second leg of your journey will begin. This leg takes you over the spectacular Hai Van Pass. Hai Van Pass has gained international acclaim since being featured on BBC’s Top Gear where it was described as “a deserted ribbon of perfection”. The pass offers unsurpassed views from almost 500 metres up, and is generally accepted to be one of the best coastal drives in the world.

You’ll arrive in charming Hoi An in time for lunch. Hoi An is UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history and vibrant culture. The riverside town’s architectural treasures have been beautifully restored and maintained, but a cosmopolitan edge gives the town a little something extra, and there’s something for everyone to enjoy here. Enjoy shopping and treat yourself to a massage, visit the historical sites and enjoy a relaxing lunch, or for those of you who prefer a little more adrenaline, there’s scuba diving, fishing and even abseiling!

 Day 7,8: Hoi An (B)

You’re free to enjoy two full days in paradisiacal Hoi An. We highly recommend you visit one of the tailors that have helped make the town a top tourist destination. You’ll be in awe at their selection of fabrics and their skills.

There are optional tours and activities that can easily be added to your itinerary, including a fishing charter, photography tours, scuba diving or snorkelling, or an amazing half-day cycle tour through the countryside.

Those of you looking to get more in touch with the cultural and historic glory of Hoi An won’t be disappointed either. You can join a historical walking tour of Marble Mountain or Hoi An, visit the My Son ruins, or join a Vietnamese cooking class.

There’s also absolutely nothing wrong with relaxing poolside at your resort and treating yourself at the spa!

Day 9: Hoi An - Siem Reap (B)

It’s time to bid farewell to Vietnam as you are transferred to the airport for your journey to Siem Reap. After a 30 minute flight, you will be greeted at the airport by your driver and guide, and transferred to your resort.

Even on your brief transfer to your hotel, you’ll notice that Cambodia is vastly different to its neighbour, Vietnam. You’ll notice different architecture, animals, people and even traffic! After checking in at your hotel, you’ll have time to freshen up before your guide explains your options for making the most of your time in the Angkor complex over the course of the next few days.

The rest of the day and the evening are yours to discover Siem Reap’s bustling streets. Visit the markets, do some shopping, visit one of the enormous varieties of restaurants, or wait for the town’s energetic night life to come alive on the aptly named Pub Street.

If you’d prefer to take in a cultural evening, we can arrange in advance for you to enjoy a traditional shadow-puppet theatre, followed by an Apsara dance show and delicious Khmer dinner.

Day 10: Siem Reap - Temple Touring (B)

Our day begins before for dawn, as we set off for Angkor Wat, with the rising sun creating a dramatic silhouette of the unusually-shaped towers in the distance – a once in a lifetime sight.

You’ll enjoy breakfast back at the hotel before starting your day of exploration at Ta Prohm, a UNESCO World Heritage Complex. The atmosphere at the temple is unlike anything you will have ever experienced. So largely reclaimed by the jungle, you’ll feel like you’re the one discovering it for the first time. Make sure your cameras are charged, because the temples are a photographer’s dream come true.

Once inside the walls of Angkor Thom City, you’ll be faced with buildings and monuments which are as impossibly big as they are ornate and beautiful. At the gates, you’ll see a never-ending tug of war between 54 gods and 54 demons, a representation of the Churning of the Ocean Milk, a fascinating legend. The tour will then take you to the Bayon, where over 200 towering faces in the likeness of King Jayavarman VII watch you from every angle, followed by the Baphoun Temple, which was built to represent the mythical Mount Meru. Next, you’ll visit the Phimeanakas temple and the Royal Palace enclosure. You’ll then see the statues of the Temple of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, whose story remains a mystery.

You’ll then stop to have a break and relax with stunning views of Angkor Wat. Various lunch options are available, but not included in the tour.

After the break, you’ll make your way to the main temple and have the opportunity to explore what were once brilliant pavilions, galleries and libraries, with beautiful carved bas art telling stories of victories and the legends of Ramayana. Climb to the summit of the temple to the holiest sanctuary of Angkor Wat and take in the views of the complex and far beyond.

The temple tour itinerary is flexible and you can discuss your preferences with you tour guide.  Weather, the time of year, and your preferences will affect which temples you visit and in what order.
