Nestled between Thailand and Vietnam on a stunning stretch of the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia is a small country with a lot to offer visitors. Unlike much of Southeast Asia, Cambodia has remained largely unspoiled in terms of large-scale tourism operations and retained its old world charm and character.
Cambodia is one of the most historic destinations in Southeast Asia. Once the seat of the Khmer empire of Angkor, the country is strewn with magnificent ruins of the mighty empire which once ruled what is now Laos, Cambodia and much of Thailand and Vietnam. None of the ruins though are as impressive as the legendary Angkor Wat; the national symbol of Cambodia and a great source of pride for its people. The largest temple complex in the world, Angkor Wat was built to represent Mount Meru – the heaven of the Hindu faith. An inspiring combination of art and devotion, the complex, which is the size of a city, never fails to impress with its stunning sculptures and striking jungle surroundings.
Just a few kilometres away, you’ll find yourself in the city of Siem Reap. A far cry from the ancient temples of Angkor Wat; Siem Reap is the most prosperous region of Cambodia, and the city has become the county’s chic tourism centre. While the city still has little in common with those of the West, you’ll find an eclectic mix of restaurants, night markets, shops and bars that are abuzz with activity until after midnight.
Away from the towering temples and bustle of the city, a different way of life awaits. Daily life in Cambodia’s rural provinces has changed very little through the centuries and you’ll find yourself in a picturesque melange of water buffalo-driven rice paddies, traditional wooden stilted houses and soaring sugar palms. You’ll find beautiful trails to explore on foot or by mountain bike, where you can climb to stunning viewpoints for unrivalled panoramas of the mountains and green valleys below. Though life out here can be hard, the air is sweet, the sun is warm and the people are always smiling.
In spite of their troubled recent past, the people of Cambodia have proven to be resilient. Widely accepted to be some of the friendliest people in the world, visitors who have travelled to Cambodia will always recall the warm, friendly nature and genuine hospitableness of their hosts who made their stays unforgettable.
As you travel further south, the lush valleys of Cambodia’s interior give way to an expansive, glittering coastline where scenic and tranquil beaches pull you in; and getting some R & R is simply unavoidable. Catch some sun on the white sand beaches, take a dip in the inviting warm water and enjoy a refreshing Cambodian beer at one of the relaxed local beach bars.
If you’re looking for an escape from the daily demands of life, and a rich, fulfilling experience, Cambodia is the perfect place to be.
