Nestled between Thailand and Cambodia on the Gulf of Thailand, and Vietnam on the South China Sea, life here has remained uncomplicated, free from the constant demands of modern-day life, and still beautifully unspoiled. If you had to describe Laos in a word, it could only be ‘authentic’.
Culture
The first thing people notice when they visit Laos is the culture. Rich, historic and respected, life in Laos is built around Buddhism and everything is done with great care and grace. Watch unhurried processions of venerable monks in saffron robes collect alms in the city streets at sunrise as they did decades ago, or visit the people of the Hill Tribes in their forest villages, whose way of life has hardly changed in a century. You’ll quickly discover that the simplicity and contentedness of life in Laos is pleasantly infectious.
There has never been a city with a curfew that can captivate you quite like Luang Prabang. Sitting at the confluence of the Mekong and the Khan rivers, Laos’ most popular city buzzes with riverside activity and just the right amount of energy for exploring. Beautifully ornate ancient temples sparkle between lively fresh produce markets and giant flowering trees in the streets. The smell of sweet spices, rich, aromatic coffee, and the earthy backwaters of the Mekong fill the air and add an imperceptible extra dimension to the city. Follow your nose and you won’t regret it. The food is simple but fragrant, and the locally-grown coffee is world-class.
Nature Lovers
Nature-lovers won’t be disappointed in Laos either. Just a few kilometres from the city, the mountainous countryside of this landlocked nation provides some of the most dramatic landscapes Asia has to offer. Waterfalls as tall as skyscrapers cascade into inviting turquoise pools where intrepid hikers can cool off. Known as ‘the Land of a Million Elephants’, much of the country’s mountain forests are national parks and wildlife sanctuaries where visitors will be treated to extraordinary wildlife encounters.
Nothing demonstrates Laos’ rich culture quite like its architecture. A combination of art, worship and history, the architectural sites are as meaningful as they are breath-taking. Visit That Luang, a grand stupa in Vientaine that looks like a giant golden fortress reaching 150 feet into the sky. According to legend, the stupa houses the breastbone of Buddha, and is the most revered religious site in the country. Buddha Park is another site not to be missed. Built by an artist turned monk, the vast gardens are filled with statues of Buddha, and the Hindu Gods and Demons, which are both impressive in size and in the incredible level of detail in each of them.
Of all the things there are to do in Laos, one of the most important is nothing. To really appreciate this magical place and get the most from its mysterious revitalising powers, you need to make time to sit back and relax, get to know your hosts and simply enjoy the unspoiled and uncomplicated way of life.
