Set between Greece and Turkey, Cyprus is influenced by both countries although its cuisine remains true to the produce from farm and sea available locally. The island is home to an abundance of excellent eateries and it’s possible to sample food from all over the world. However, we’ve narrowed it down for you with our list of the top five special places to eat in Cyprus. The list is in no particular order.

Syrian Arab Friendship Club Nicosia

This weirdly named eatery should be high on your list if you are in Nicosia or Limassol. Although the décor could do with an upgrade, the food is mouth-watering. A 15-platter mezé includes all the usuals such as baba ganouj, moutabal and kibbeh and there’s also a vegetarian option if you so desire. There’s a touristy option in Paphos with belly dancing at the weekends and the restaurant is open from 12 noon to midnight. No website Contact: 00 357 2532 8838 (Limassol)

Mia Delicy Limassol

Opened in early 2014, Mia Delicy in Limassol receives an overwhelming thumbs up from all its patrons for breakfast (it opens at 10am!), lunch and dinner. Their focus is handmade, local food that’s prepared with real flair and passion. They take local dishes as well as dishes from around the world and infuse them with the Mia Delicy touch. Enjoy a Salty Cow sandwich or the Yanky Smokey Piggy for lunch and come back for the Big Porky Chop or livers and orzo for dinner. Image sourced via: miadelicy.com

Aqui Mediterranean Fusion Restaurant Paphos

Love food, love sunset, love wine is the mission statement of Aqui and it really encapsulates the ethos of this Mediterranean fusion restaurant. And fusion it is – you can get curry, paella, rack of lamb or steak but it’s all prepared with local produce. With mountains on one side and the sea on the other, Aqui is a relaxing and romantic venue. Booking is essential as it accommodates only 15 people per night but as all the food is prepared fresh be prepared to sit a while before you are served – perhaps order a sea breeze or something a little more exotic from their cocktail menu while you wait. Gevseis en Lefko Larnaka

Gevseis en Lefko serves Greek food although its management is Cypriot. It’s located on the newly renovated Pialé Pashá promenade which is one of the most beautiful walkways in Larnaka and its terraced seating is only a stone’s throw from the ocean. The food is top notch and the portions are huge. If you still have room for dessert, try the Kazan ti pi which is cold custard topped with burnt cinnamon and mastiha sugar. It’s a bit like marmite… you either love it or hate it. No website Address: Pialé Pashá 8, just south of the fort, Larnaka Contact: 00 357 2465 5664
