5 Reasons to Add Northern Cyprus to your Bucket-list
Have you considered visiting Northern Cyprus? If you haven’t, it might be time that you did. Northern Cyprus is a Mecca for visitors that are looking for a quiet, uncomplicated holiday to relax and recharge.
Here are just a few of the reasons that it belongs on your bucketlist.
1. Northern Cyprus is Authentic
Northern Cyprus remains an authentic and unspoiled experience for visitors. Unlike the South, it has kept its earthy, rustic and unassuming feeling. Development has been minimal, and visitors are treated to scenes from centuries ago in the form of churches, small traditional harbours, and best of all – authentic food, with strong Greek and Turkish influence that’s lovingly made for guests in charming restaurants.

2. Northern Cyprus is Affordable
Just as Northern Cyprus has remained humble, so have the prices. If you choose to stay in hotels and eat your meals at restaurants, you can expect to spend about £20 for a 3-course meal with wine. Although many of the activities on offer are relatively new and cater almost solely to the tourist market, they still won’t cost you an arm or a leg.
3. Northern Cyprus is Away from Hustle and Bustle
You’ve probably already picked up on the fact that Northern Cyprus is a quiet destination. Don’t get us wrong, there are loads of things to do, but there isn’t that hustle and bustle feeling as though a hundred things are happening all around you – quite the opposite in fact. It’s as though life here moves at a slower rate; as if there are a few more minutes in every hour, and everyone makes a point of sitting back to enjoy them. If you’re looking for a holiday destination to help you unwind, then Northern Cyprus is the place for you.
4. Northern Cyprus is Full of History
As with many destinations in the area, Northern Cyprus has a rich history, which can be seen in the architecture and art. The Walled City of Nicosia is a must see. Built in the 16th century by Venetians, the walls of the city are the best-preserved of its kind in the world. Within the walls, you’ll find one of the world’s most beautiful Gothic-style mosques. Also within the walls are Turkish baths, which were established over 500 years ago, and can still be visited. Another not to be missed historical site is the Apostolos Andreas Monastery, which lies within Northern Cyprus’ only National Park. Hear about the Monastery’s legends and why it remains a popular site of pilgrimage today.
5. Northern Cyprus is the Place for Activities
If there’s one thing that Northern Cyprus is not short on, it’s activities. A world-renowned hiking attraction is the 220km trail along the Five Finger Mountain. You can hike beautiful stretches of the trail and be sure to see wild orchids and numerous bird species.
If hiking is a little high up for your liking, Northern Cyprus offers some exceptional diving. The water is warm enough to enjoy diving year-round and options range from diving with stingrays and turtles to 2000 year old shipwrecks. Still one of the best ways to explore the water though, is by boat. You can rent yourself a small motor boat for a day, or hire a charter to take you to the most beautiful and interesting locations along the coast. The options don’t stop there though. You can go paragliding over the Kyrenia coast, or enjoy 18 holes at one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world.
