Sri Lanka wildlife safaris

Sri Lanka has a wide range of National Parks, nature reserves that covers vast areas of bio-diverse terrain, from North to the South. These national parks home to Elephants ,leopards, crocodiles, Sloth bears, Deer and over 400 varieties of birds to name a few.

Some of the most popular national parks are,

  • Yala & Wilpattu National parks:
    Popular for its Leopards density. Best time to visit ‘Yala’ is the dry season from March to End of August. Usually ‘Yala’ would be close for tourists in September.
  • Wilpattu National park:
    This On the other hand is best to be explored during February to October.
  • Udawalawa , Minneriya & Wasgamuwa National parks:
    Known for its elephant population. ‘Udawalawa’ is an all year round park where from November to march migrant birds can be observed too. The best time to visit Minneriay National park is from May to October and ‘Wasgamuwa’ is during November to March.

Hiking & trekking in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s diverse landscape provides some good hiking hotspots and here are few places not to be missed.

  • Sinharaja Rain Forest:
    A UNESCO world heritage site and a natural rain forest. The only way to explore is by walking as jeep safaris not permitted. Birds, butterflies, reptiles & insects are common here. Visitors are required to obtain permits from the Wildlife Department in order to visit this sanctuary.
  • Hortan Plains National parks:
    A scenic plain in the highlands of Sri Lanka with the beautiful Bakers’ fall and a dramatic 880 metre drop.
  • Knuckles Mountain range nature reserve:T
    his scenic mountainous reserve is ideal for trekking, hiking, bird watching as well as for camping.

 

Adventure Sports

Sri Lanka is surrounded by crystal clear waters. Sports like Water skiing, banana rides, jet ski, surfing & Snorkelling would be available to keep you active during your stay. South Western coast of the island renowned for water sports although it can be a bit too crowded for some. North East of Sri Lanka on the other hand is ideal for those who seek unspoilt & less crowded beaches.

  • Surfing Hikkaduwa & Bentota:
    These beaches are known to be the best location for surfing & many other water sports.
  • Kite Surfing:
    ‘Kalpitiya Lagoon’ is known to have all the right conditions.
  • Whale Watching:
    Areas like Mirissa, Trincomalee Galle & Kalpitiya are recommended.
  • Hot air ballooning:
    These rides are available and could be a great experience.
  • White water rafting:
    In Kelani river in Kitual gala is something you shouldn’t be missed too.
