Walking through the back roads of downtown central Kyrenia you’d be forgiven for thinking that time had stopped about twenty years ago. Men play backgammon and sip coffee under trees full of plump citrus fruit whilst ancient churches and towers sit amongst shops so full of golden trinkets and jewellery it’s as if you’ve stumbled upon a cave of wonders.

Brightly coloured birds sing in the trees and the smell of freshly baked bread wafts through the winding streets as you browse through book shops and stores that create hundreds of flavours of Turkish delight. And if you’re at a good enough vantage point to see the five finger mountain range, the beautiful Kyrenia Castle might also be visible; eternally guarding the coast and creating the most breathtaking backdrop for the old harbour. Despite the idyllic atmosphere and location, Kyrenia town centre is not completely untouched by the modern world, with many conveniences offered for locals and guests alike from clothing boutiques and casinos to international banks and public transport, and lavish Kyrenia hotels.

Kyrenia is a fairly lively part of Northern Cyprus, with a somewhat active nightlife for those who seek it, although the bars, discos and casinos are easy to avoid if you want a quiet and relaxed pace to your evenings. The horse-shoe shaped harbour is the main draw for tourists as the alfresco restaurants offer a beautiful sea view highlighted by the chain tower and the spectacular castle that is lit from below at night.
