Take A History Lesson At Ancient Sites Of Xanthos & Letoon

The Ancient Sites of Xanthos and Letoon

These sacred and spiritual grounds carry within them the pulse of Lycia, and Turkey’s history. According to belief Letoon was dedicated to the three national deities of Lycia: Leto and her twin children, Apollo and Artemis. Leto in particular was worshiped as a family deity and was the guardian to the tomb. Letoon is positioned less than 10km to the south of Xanthos, which became the capital of Lycia during the 2nd century BC and includes some fascinating examples of Lycian tombs. It was also here that a pillar was discovered; baring inscriptions in both Greek and Lycian that in turn enabled the Lycian language to be understood.

Due to their close proximity Letoon and Xanthos are often seen as a double site, also with historical links through the fact Letoon was administered by Xanthos. These combine to make one of the most awe inspiring archaeological sites to see in Turkey, which is further emphasised by the fact they are actually 1 of 9 registered UNESCO locations (places of special cultural or physical significance).

Xanthos is situated between Fethiye and Kalkan while Letoon is not far from Patara. A visit to here could therefore provide you with the perfect blend of beach and exploration if you wished, though there is certainly enough historic beauty to keep you busy.

Step Down 400 Steps To Hidden Kapatus Beach in Kalkan

Kaputas Beach

Kaputas Beach is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches to visit. It is 400 steps down from the pathway and this is what makes it so special, due to the fact it is tucked away in a secluded cove with unspoilt white sand and turquoise sea, perfect for snorkelling and diving!

It is a short journey from Kas road and reachable from Kalkan also. This is the ideal location for relaxing and feeling far away from the stresses of the rest of the world. Due to the cut off nature of the beach it is a good idea to bring a drink and some snacks, although in the summer there will often be people selling food and cold drinks.
