Bellapais is a tranquil and beautiful small village in the Mountain Range of North Cyprus. It was built in 13th Century by the monks of Premonstratensian order. It is the most magnificent and beautiful ruin set in a breathtaking location. The Bellapais Abbey is precariously balanced on a natural terrace with an imposing view down to Kyrenia and the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Today the site is a museum, with a restaurant and a café, and still occasionally used for classical music concerts and exhibitions.
Visitors can choose to while away the day exploring Bellapais village with its small lanes and narrow streets, filled many fine and inexpensive cafes and bistros dotted amongst the whitewashed buildings. Or just soak up the relaxed and laid back atmosphere under the ‘Tree of Idleness’ an ancient mulberry made famous in “Bitter Lemons”. However, according to legend whoever sits under this tree becomes lethargic and content and be unwilling to work ever again.
