If visiting historical monuments and ancient ruins is your idea of a perfect holiday then Northern Cyprus makes for the best destination in the Mediterranean. There are so many places to visit that you will find difficult to fit it all in. Kyrenia holidays are focused around its Venetian Harbour where you can find Kyrenia Castle and St Hilarion Castle.

Kantara Castle is situated east of  North Cyprus and it is in the most beautiful of mountain settings with wonderful views of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea on both sides. Buffaveneto Castle means “defier of the wind”, with the highest point of the castle at 950 metres above sea level it is the highest of three castles. Buffavento was used as a signalling point for Kantara and St Hilarion Castles.

Go a little further out and you will find Bellapais Abbey also known as “The Abbey of Peace” is a magnificent Gothic site and an absolute must for all visitors. Situated north east Kyrenia and set on a mountain side originally built in 12th Century. Now, musical concerts are held here during spring and summer. The village of Bellapais has the most wonderful views over Kyrenia and the Mediterranean Sea beyond that most people find it hard to leave. Or it could be due to sitting and relaxing under “The Tree of Idleness” to watch the world go by, legend has it that anyone who sits under this tree long enough they become lazy and sluggish.

Othello’s Tower and Citadel is a medieval fortress guarding the harbour and town of Famagusta. Othello’s Tower is considered to the inspiration used by Shakespeare for his epic play Othello. The town of Famagusta is only a little over an hours drive from your Holiday Village Kyrenia and here you can experience some of the most excellent views of both modern and ancient harbours. Ships today still use the same entrance as those in ancient times.

It is not just sightseeing that Northern Cyprus has to offer, you will be hard pressed to find better beaches anywhere else. Whether it is private cove for a romantic picnic you are looking or long stretch of sandy beach with lots of water sports activities that you will not be disappointed .

Many of the hotels have private beaches of their own, some of which are open to non-residents but usually for a small fee. Summer sun can get very strong and can burn the skin in no time at all so make sure to keep sun block handy and drink plenty of water. Escape Beach is located to the West of Kyrenia. It is a sandy beach which is ideal for children of all ages. There are shower facilities on the beach along with a bar and restaurant. Escape Beach is where everyone goes for beach parties.

Alagadi Beach is located to the East of Kyrenia. This is one of the quieter beaches of North Cyprus with just a small café for hiring umbrellas but there are no water sports activities offered here. This is also a protected turtle beach where the female turtles come ashore to lay their eggs so are carefully monitored by groups of students. There is a centre of “Turtle Project” close by for visitors to find out more about turtle conservation projects.

The Karpas or “the pan handle” as it is often referred to, is quite a drive, but it is definitely worth a visit. The Karpas peninsula has probably got the most beautiful sandy beaches in North Cyprus which you will find you have to yourselves. You will need to hire a car for this trip as buses do not go all the way and with a hire car you are able to make stops as there are a number of attractions along the way, including the ancient city of Famagusta.
