Northern Cyprus is just now receiving the attention from tourists that it deserves. Along with its untouched white beaches and old world charm, the wonderful harbour town of Kyrenia is a big reason why visitors are starting to appreciate the region. Here are just a few things that are bringing people back here, year after year.

Seeing turtles hatching on Alagadi beach

Alagadi beach plays host to what is often the most cherished memory visitors bring back from a trip to Kyrenia. Often referred to as Turtle Beach, it is one of the longest stretches of sand in Northern Cyprus and is where hundreds of loggerhead and green turtles lay their eggs each year.

When these eggs hatch, spectators are able to observe baby turtles crawling through the sand and into the sea for the very first time. This usually proves to be a magical experience – one that you’ll truly never forget.

Visiting Kyrenia Castle

Kyrenia Castle is so ancient that nobody now knows exactly when it was built, with most estimates placing its initial construction as far back as the 8th century. Initially constructed by the Byzantines, the castle was subsequently used by the Venetians, Ottomans and British, so it offers a fascinating reflection of the region’s history.

The castle also holds the Shipwreck Museum, which houses the preserved remains of a merchant ship dating back over 2400 years. Or, for more intrepid souls, there’s the Kyrenia Castle dungeons, which display some of the more unsavoury aspects of Medieval life.
